What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. With this unique capability, GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations-helping users make smarter decisions.

Abilene's GIS (Geographical Information System) Division is the one-stop-shop for the City's GIS data, as well as spatial analysis services. This technology consists of an organized collection of spatial geographic data and procedures designed to capture, store, update, analyze and display information in useful ways. The team collaborates with other organizations and districts to create rich data resources for use in local government-- e.g., streets, utilities, economic development, and planning. These datasets also integrate with other enterprise applications such as asset management, permit tracking, new address creation, computer aided dispatch and more.
